NetNest
A downloadable project
The proposed structure (netted-ropes) on the UC campus supports UC Thrive’s vision of enhancing student well-being and social interaction. By introducing a playful, elevated installation, it encourages spontaneous engagement, offering a higher-level space for students to connect, climb, and relax. The close proximity of nodes fosters unplanned conversations, while the verticality introduces a sense of exploration and crossing paths at different heights. The location, which is currently underutilized, would be reclaimed and transformed into a social hub, attracting students to interact in a space designed for them .
The structure’s elevation separates the space from ground distractions, offering students a calm, private escape while also promoting environmental comfort by blocking direct sunlight. The shading effect creates a cooler microclimate, inviting students to stay longer, even on hot days .
Inspired by precedents like the Ku.Be House in Copenhagen, which uses movement to drive social connection, this structure integrates play and rest to enhance both physical activity and community building . As a visual landmark, it would not only serve as a beacon but also as a dynamic gathering space, transforming an overlooked area into an active, welcoming part of the campus .
